Energy audit software

Persuasive CMC’s Home Tune-uP® audit successfully persuades homeowners to invest in energy efficiency where others fail. It is the only audit that identifies the group of recommended improvements in the home that, when implemented, will save more on the energy bills than the cost of the homeowner’s monthly loan payment. We call this the pay-as-you-save group of improvements.

Easy to Use Home Tune-uP’s® detailed and customized 15-page audit report can be generated, edited, and printed in a matter of minutes. The software is flexible, allowing the auditor to include in the report those features relevant to the client.  As new products become available, they can easily be added. The software also allows photos taken in the home to be included.

Accurate In estimating savings and costs, we go the extra mile:

  • CMC’s Home Tune-uP® software bases heating and cooling energy savings on your local weather station, not on averages for the state or region.
  • The dollar energy savings reflect the actual price of energy paid by the customer, not averages for the region.
  • The efficiency of the cooling system is modified by local humidity levels.
  • The costs of the improvements are based on prices from RSMeans Repair & Remodeling Cost Data Book, the equivalent of the car repair Blue Book. These costs take account of local labor wages and are updated each year.
  • We avoid double counting by taking  into account reductions in individual savings when more than one improvement is made (i.e. increasing insulation and replacing the heating and/or cooling system).
  • Heat pump: The heating efficiency of the heat pump is adjusted according to local heating degree days.
  • Windows:  Estimates take account of the beneficial solar gains during the winter, as well as the increased air conditioning load during the summer.
  • Appliances: To estimate savings for replacing appliances that still work, Tune-uP refers to the efficiency of the appliance being replaced, not to the minimum efficiency of the appliance in today’s market.

Recruit/train/certify auditors, weatherization technicians, and post-installation inspectors

CMC creates customized training classes to fit the requirements of our utility customers. From the fundamentals of energy efficiency to full-service energy audit training, CMC can tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of utility personnel to be trained.

CMC was the first energy services company to offer in-class energy audit training nationwide. To date, CMC has trained more than 2,000 home energy auditors throughout the United States. Conduct home energy audits
CMC’s auditors conduct a thorough examination of the home, answering over 100 questions to determine how energy is being used and to identify savings opportunities.
The inspection includes:

  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Distribution systems
  • Air infiltration
  • Water heater
  • Window, skylight and shade improvements
  • Ceiling insulation
  • Outside wall, partition wall and knee wall insulation
  • Basement wall and window insulation
  • Floor insulation
  • Laundry and kitchen appliances

Blower Door Tests

The auditors and/or weatherization technicians use this diagnostic tool to estimate the air tightness of the house and/or to find the air leaks.

Infrared Thermometer

An infrared thermometer is used to identify hidden gaps in insulation, or duct leaks inside the wall, or air gaps where pipes enter the envelope.

The Audit Report

Tailored to each home, the audit report provides all the information required to persuade homeowners to invest in energy efficiency … and smile. The auditor enters the information collected from the home into our software, which analyzes the data using over 1,000 computer calculations. The report provides information and tables specifying the costs, savings and financing eligibility of energy-efficiency improvements in the home.
The report shows:

  • All opportunities for improving the energy efficiency of the home
  • Estimated savings, costs and payback for each improvement
  • The group of improvements that everyone can afford, since they save more on monthly energy bills than they cost when financed
  • A detailed description and discussion of each recommendation
  • Energy efficiency measures that are low- or no-cost
  • Help for finding contractors or a list of recommended contractors
  • Financing information and tax credits
  • Guidance on indoor air quality

Administer the installation of major improvements
CMC has successfully administered thousands of major home installation projects for utility clients. For low income programs, we provide the work orders for energy efficient implementations, ensure that all customers are promptly served, answer all customer inquiries, and oversee all sub-contractors who install the measures. We also conduct post installation inspections for quality control purposes, including ensuring that any outstanding problems are resolved.

Provide post-installation inspections
To ensure that the improvements result in energy savings, CMC does a post-installation inspection of every house that is improved. The inspection reviews contractors’ installation procedures and ensures that the recommended improvements have been properly installed. The contractor agrees to remedy any deficiencies discovered by the inspector. This is also the time that a safety check is made.

Staff customer call center and technical support lines
CMC staffs and maintains customer call centers for its utility programs. Our customer service representatives place outgoing phone calls to eligible homeowners, and receive incoming calls requesting information. They gather customer demographic information to determine eligibility status. Once confirmed, they schedule appointments for the auditors.

CMC also staffs a technical support desk for our auditors and inspectors, to answer technical questions, troubleshoot and resolve any issues they may have regarding our proprietary software, web-based tracking system or companion applications. Our technical staff tracks, documents and refers technical issues to the IT department for resolution.

Track and report customer participation, implementation and evaluation
CMC maintains a customized database to track and report on customer participation, implementation and evaluation data on a monthly basis. We keep a complete record of each customer's year-to-date status, from the first telephone contact to post-installation inspections.

To evaluate energy savings and load management impacts of programs, we record customer utility bill usage and payments information.

We track and report program expenditures by month, as required by state regulations, and prepare data reports as needed for independent evaluations.
Statistical data compiled include:

  • number of homes audited
  • number of homes weatherized
  • itemized cost of measures installed
  • total cost per home including materials and labor
  • types of housing structures weatherized
  • customer demographics
  • energy consumption
